Visakhapatnam, October 4:*_ The launch of the “In the Service of Auto Drivers” scheme in Gajuwaka on Friday was marked by unusual symbolism. *State Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president and MLA for Gajuwaka, Palla Srinivasa Rao*, chose to arrive at the venue not in the customary cavalcade, but behind the wheel of an auto-rickshaw.The programme, organised at the Sri Krishnadevaraya Kalyana Mandapam in the 71st ward, witnessed an overwhelming turnout of auto union members who accorded him a rousing welcome. The venue resounded with drumbeats, firecrackers, and chants of “Palla garu zindabad!” as floral garlands and shawls were heaped on the leader in a display of gratitude.Addressing the gathering, Mr. Srinivasa Rao recalled his meeting with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in August, where he had highlighted the hardships faced by auto drivers and their families. “The outcome of that appeal is visible today. The Chief Minister has sanctioned an annual financial assistance of ₹15,000 to every auto driver under the newly-launched scheme, first announced at the ‘Super Six – Super Hit’ rally in Anantapur. This is not merely a welfare measure but a historic decision that reflects the TDP’s deep humanism,” he said.According to official figures, the government has allocated ₹435.35 crore to extend the benefit to 2,90,234 drivers across Andhra Pradesh, including 2.64 lakh auto drivers, 20,072 taxi drivers, and 6,400 maxi cab drivers. In Gajuwaka alone, nearly 12,000 families are expected to gain financial relief from the programme.Mr. Srinivasa Rao observed that the scheme was not part of the coalition’s election manifesto, but was nonetheless introduced out of genuine concern for the working class. “On behalf of the people of the State, I extend heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister for this gesture,” he added.Drawing a sharp contrast with the previous YSRCP government, he noted that auto drivers had suffered neglect and humiliation under Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s administration, reeling under rising fuel costs, tax burdens, penalties, and police harassment. “Their livelihoods were pushed into crisis. The present coalition government, however, has taken a courageous step to restore dignity and stability to their lives. This is not mere financial assistance—it is the beginning of a welfare revolution for the community of auto drivers,” he remarked.
Pledging the coalition’s continued commitment to the working class, Mr. Srinivasa Rao asserted: “As long as this government is in office, no labourer or daily-wage family shall be left in despair. Schemes like ‘In the Service of Auto Drivers’ are a testament to the foresight and compassion of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, and to the coalition’s steadfast commitment to people-centric governance
