The Department of Botany, St. Joseph's College for Women (Autonomous), Visakhapatnam, organized an awareness program on “Environmental Management through Sustainable Development” today. The distinguished Guest Speaker, Prof. K. Veerabhadram, Adjunct Professor, Department of Environmental Science, Andhra University, delivered an insightful and thought-provoking lecture.
In his address, Prof. Veerabhadram elaborated on:
The concept and pillars of Sustainable Development – Society, Environment and Economy
The 5 P’s: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership
Effects of climate change such as heat waves, storms, droughts and rising sea levels
Air Quality Index (AQI) and its categories
India’s National Missions under climate action
Mitigation strategies including renewable energy use, energy conservation, forest restoration and reduction of greenhouse gases
Carbon credits and carbon footprint
The session was highly informative and created awareness among students about environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.The programme concluded with an interactive session and vote of thanks. The programme was presided over by Dr. K. Manikya Kumari, Head, Department of Botany.
The event was coordinated by Assistant Professors Dr. M. Padma Sundari and Dr. N. Nagaraju. I & II B.Sc. students of Botany, Zoology and Agricultural Science, Faculty members Dr. Ram Kumar, Mr. Srinivas and Mr. Anikanta were present. Prof. Veerabhadram was felicitated as a mark of gratitude. The Principal Dr. Sr. Shyji, Vice Principal Dr. Sr. Hema, and Office Superintendent Sr. Mary appreciated the efforts of the Department of Botany for organizing such a meaningful academic programme.
